ครุฑสมัยอยุธยา นำมาใช้เป็นสัญลักษณ์ที่มีความเกี่ยวข้องกับพระมหากษัตริย์ เมื่อมีการยกย่องพระมหากษัตริย์เป็นดั่งองค์พระนารายณ์อวตารมาเป็นพระราม กษัตริย์แห่งสูรยวงศ์ผู้ครองเมืองอโยธยาในคัมภีร์มหากาพย์รามายณะ ดังนั้นครุฑในฐานะสัญลักษณ์ของพระนารายณ์ จึงถูกนำมาใช้เป็นสัญลักษณ์แทนองค์พระมหากษัตริย์แห่งกรุงศรีอยุธยาหลายด้าน และปรากฏในรูปแบบต่าง ๆ โดยเฉพาะในตราพระราชลัญจกรพระครุฑพ่าห์ รวมถึงครุฑโขนเรือพระที่นั่งด้วย
งานศิลปกรรมที่สะท้อนคติเรื่องครุฑในสังคมสมัยอยุธยานั้นมีหลากหลายรูปแบบ ทั้งงานสถาปัตยกรรมประติมากรรม จิตรกรรม รวมถึงประณีตศิลป์ ซึ่งนอกจากครุฑที่เป็นสัญลักษณ์ที่มีความเกี่ยวข้องกับพระมหากษัตริย์แล้ว ยังมีครุฑตามความเชื่อทางพุทธศาสนาด้วย การนำรูปครุฑมาตกแต่งศาสนสถาน เพื่อสื่อความหมายว่าครุฑคือผู้พิทักษ์ ศาสนสถานยังสืบทอดต่อมา งานสถาปัตยกรรมจึงปรากฏรูปครุฑอยู่หลายส่วน เช่น ครุฑปูนปั้นประดับเจดีย์ทรงปรางค์ ที่ชั้นเชิงบาตรครุฑแบกพระมหาธาตุเจดีย์ วัดราชบูรณะ จังหวัดพระนครศรีอยุธยา ครุฑที่หน้าบันอุโบสถ วิหาร มีทั้งงานจำหลักไม้ งานปูนปั้น ทำรูปพระนารายณ์ทรงครุฑ หรือรูปครุฑอย่างเดียวก็มี เช่น พระนารายณ์ทรงครุฑ หน้าบันจำหลักไม้ วัดแม่นางปลื้ม จังหวัดพระนครศรีอยุธยา ครุฑปูนปั้นหน้าบันอุโบสถ วัดเขาบันไดอิฐ จังหวัดเพชรบุรี พระนารายณ์ทรงครุฑปูนปั้น หน้าบันอุโบสถ วัดไผ่ล้อม จังหวัดเพชรบุรี ครุฑแบกปูนปั้นประดับฐานเสมาวัดสระบัว จังหวัดเพชรบุรี
ครุฑในงานจิตรกรรมมักอยู่ในภาพเทพชุมชุม เช่น ครุฑชุมชุม จิตรกรรมฝาผนังอุโบสถวัดเกาะ จังหวัดเพชรบุรี ครุฑในภาพเทพชุมชุม จิตรกรรมฝาผนังอุโบสถวัดใหญ่สุวรรณาราม จังหวัดเพชรบุรี ครุฑประดับเครื่องใช้ในพระพุทธศาสนา อาทิ ครุฑประดับธรรมมาสน์ ที่วัดพระศรีรัตนมหาธาตุวรมหาวิหาร จังหวัดพิษณุโลก ครุฑในตู้พระธรรมลายรดน้ำ หีบพระธรรม เช่น พญาครุฑบนบานประตูตู้พระธรรม ฝีมือช่างครูวัดเชิงหวาย ครุฑในงานประณีตศิลป์ เช่น ครุฑทองคำประดับพระปรางค์จำลองครุฑทองคำเหยียบนาค พบในกรุพระปรางค์วัดราชบูรณะ จังหวัดพระนครศรีอยุธยา
In Ayutthaya period, Garuda was adopted as a symbol that referred to Thai kings who were worshipped as an avatar of Narayana, King Rama of Suryavamsha dynasty ruling Ayodhya city in the epic Ramayana. Thus, Garuda, as a symbolic image of Narayana, became the symbol representing the kings of the Ayutthaya Kingdom for various affairs which appeared in many designs, especially royal seals, Phra Ratcha Lanchakon including royal barge bows .
The artworks reflecting the beliefs on Garuda in the Ayutthaya period were found in a diversity of arts, such as architecture, sculptures, paintings and fine arts. Apart from being a symbol referring to kings, Garuda is also related to Buddhist beliefs. For example, Garuda image is used to decorate religious places signifying that he is the guardian. Also, Garuda served as architectural ornaments are found in many artworks, for instance, Garuda stucco decoration on the Prang of Wat Ratchaburana, Pra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, Vishnu riding Garuda depicted on the carved wooden gable at Wat Mae Nang Pluem, Pra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, Garuda stucco on the gable of the chapel in Wat Khao Bandai It, Phetchaburi Province, Vishnu riding Garuda stucco on the gable of the ordination hall of Wat Phai Lom, Phetchaburi Province, Garuda stucco in carrying posture decorated at the base of sima boundary stone at Wat Sa Bua, Phetchaburi Province, etc.
Garuda in paintings is usually depicted in an assembly of divinities, such as mural paintings on the chapel of Wat Ko, Phetchaburi Province, mural paintings at Wat Yai Suwannaram, Phetchaburi Province. Garuda decoration is also presented in Buddhist temple furniture, such as Garuda decoration on the sermon throne at Wat Maha That, Phitsanulok Province, and Garuda decoration on lacquer and gilt scripture cabinet and scripture box.
A notable work of such decoration is Garuda on doors of a cabinet created by artisans of Wat Choeng Wai. Furthermore, Garuda is presented in fine arts, such as golden Garuda decoration on the miniature Prang, golden Garuda standing on Naga found at the crypt inside the Prang of Wat Ratchaburana, Pra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, etc.
