“Om mani padme hum” Jeweled Ornament Emerging in the Lotus Chantra for Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva Bodhisattva is derived from “Bodhi”, which means transcendental enlightenment, and “Sattva”, which means cores or qualities. According to Mahayana Buddhism, Bodhisattva is committed to enable all beings to let go of suffering and achieve enlightenment or “nibbhana”. For Mahayanists, Bodhisattvas are as countless as the grains of sand at the bottom of the sacred river Ganges. A Bodhisattava that is widely worshipped is “Avalokitesvara”. The name Avalokitesvara means “The Lord who looks down with divine compassion.” One of his quality is “great mercy”, for he postponed his own enlightenment in order to free all creatures from their suffering. Avalokitesvara is an emanation of Amitabha, presiding to safeguard all beings in the present age which is a period between the time the present Buddha, Gautama Buddha, attained Parinibbhanaand – the total release from the cycle of rebirth – and the enlightenment of the future Buddha, “Phra Sri-Araya-Metrai”. After Tantrism or Vajrayana Buddhism originated, Avalokitesvara was revered as the “Protector of The Universe” or “Lokanath”. According to the Lokesvara-Sataka scripture, he is a supreme being who shines an eternal cleansing light upon the darkness of Avijja; the ignorances born of the cycle of rebirth. One of the most prominent form of Avalokitesvara among Vajrayana Buddhism tradition is “Padmapani Bodhisattva”, which means “the Lord who holds the lotus”; the lotus symbolizes the power of creation given by Amitabha Buddha. Avalokitesavara Samuntamuk Bodhisattva, the form in which he possessed 11 heads and 22 hands, was also worshipped. “Samuntamuk” means having circumambient faces and abilities to see all that surround, which is consistent with the scripture in the Lotus Sutra: “Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva tended to all beings in all worlds, protecting them from calamities.” The worship of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva has been manifested to Sathing Phra Peninsula and Songkhla Lake Basin since the 12th century Buddhist Era (BE) through Mahayana Buddhism. Later in the 14th-15th centuries BE, Tantric or Vajrayana Buddhism started to have more influence. It was during this era that Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva gained the highest veneration. A myriad of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statues was found in forms of Lokanath Bodhisattva, Padmapani Bodhisattva, and Samuntamuk Bhodisatava in the two ancient communities on the sides of Songkhla Lake. It is assumed that his prevalence came from the belief that he protects travelers from harm
